How to fix Xiaomi Redmi 2 camera focus problem

The problem

Here we discus a common camera problem of some Xiaomi Redmi 2 (and Redmi 2 TD, and Redmi 2A). The problem is that the camera cannot focus on distant objects (and apparently cannot focus on infinity) but can focus on close objects (macro).

Symptoms

This can be  noticed also as a lack of sharpness on distant object contrary to close objects which appear sharp. Other symptoms are the difficulty to focus when trying to focus on distant objects. Focus in that case is "hunting" and even when appears to "lock" in fact it is out of focus.

How to repair

Generally you need to sent it back for repair. But when you buy from china postage might be more expensive than repairing it yourself.
The easiest way is to buy a replacement camera module part for you mobile (cost as 03/2016 about 10$).  Like this
Replacement camera module

Watch a video how you replace the defective camera with a new one. If you do not want to pay for a part you can try to repair the defective one yourself. Of course you understand the whatever you do to your phone by trying the advices here you do it at your own risk. if you don't fill comfortable with these steps or don't want to take the risk damaging your mobile phone please stop. If you proceed with this guide you do it at your own risk.

1. First you disassemble the xiaomi redmi 2 (actually you need to remove only the back of the phone and nothing else).

2. You remove the camera module (unplug its cable from phone m/b and gently remove it)

3. Mark the initial position of the internal lens to the outer frame (use a cd marker) for later reference (so to know how much you rotated it).

4. Heat the module with a hair drier to soften the glue of the inner lens module. Don't overheat it, you will melt it! I guess 1 minute (max) exposure to the heat is ok (and don't bring too close).

5. Rotate the lens inside module clockwise (left to right) at about 20 degrees (depends how bad the "out of focus" problem is). You need to bring the lens closer to the sensor so it focuses further in the distance (this is usually the case when not focusing distance objects). That is why you rotate clockwise.

 6. Once the lens is turned let it cool for a minute. Put it back and assemble the phone. Test if its ok by taking some distant and close photos. If it is not ok, repeat steps 1-6 using more or less rotation or anticlockwise to reverce any bad adjustment. If again there is no improvement maybe you need a new camera module or the problem is elsewhere.

Happy fixing

  1. Did it on mine. After heating with hairdryer, I turned it clockwise 1/4 of turn. Before it couldn't focus more then 1m or so. The focus is now perfectly sharp at all ranges. The macro is focusing at 12cm. I'm very happy with results.
The camera module I bought from Aliexpress (for 9$) was better (but not perfect) and still needs to be tweaked. I ended up by tweaking my old camera module.

  2. Hi, how did you turn the lens? Just with your fingertip or using some tool?

    1. You cannot turn the lens only with your fingers. Try to make some tool, avoid metal tweezers as it can scratch the lens!!! I modified a disposable plastic coffee spoon to fit.

    2. I used the tool you see on the photo holding the camera module (forceps) by holding with it the inner part and turning it. Also a small screwdriver can be used pressing one side only. Improvise

  3. Thank you for your post. This is excellent information. It is amazing and wonderful to visit your blog.I think offering an Onsite mobile repair is pretty common practice. I never used mine, but it is nice knowing that if I needed it, it will be always there.
